What Proverbs Has To Say About Parents

In my Bible reading the other day I came across a section about parents and children in proverbs in my new chronological Bible.  It is a really exciting concept for me to read the Bible this way (in chronological order) but very refreshing in proverbs as all the subjects are gathered together under one heading.  I could post something every day about a new subject.  What an idea!  But for today, I wanted to list the verses that talk about parents and children as they have always fascinated me.  In particular, I am amazed at what is promised to children who bless their parents and honor them.  It is the only commandment given that is also given with a promise of a blessing to those children who do so.

These verses were taken from Proverbs in the New International Version (NIV)

1:8-9 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.  They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.

10:1 A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.

11:29 Whoever brings ruin on their family will inherit only wind, and the fool will be servant to the wise.

15:20 A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish man despises his mother.

17:2 A prudent servant will rule over a disgraceful son and will share the inheritance as one of the family.

17:6 Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.

17:21 To have a fool for a child brings grief; there is no joy for the parent of a godless fool.

17:25 A foolish son brings grief to his father and bitterness to the mother who bore him.

19:26 Whoever robs their father and drives out their mother is a child who brings shame and disgrace.

20:20 If someone curses their father or mother, their lamp will be snuffed out in pitch darkness.

23:22-25 Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.  Buy the truth and do not sell it – wisdom, instruction and insight as well.  The father of a righteous child has great joy; a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him.  May your father and mother rejoice; may she who gave you birth be joyful.

28:24 Whoever robs their father or mother and says, “It’s not wrong,” is partner to one who destroys.

That’s it for the verses in proverbs regarding parents and children.  I hope you have children who bless and honor you for they are such a joy if they do.  If you don’t, I might suggest praying these scriptures over them.  God’s Word never returns to Himself void!
